About the Workshop

To launch our 2024-25 Automata Series of workshops, we are offering the first for FREE! Learn how to make simple mechanisms from Automata and learn about our plans for the entire year. This introductory unit will teach you several simple automata that you can easily make at home with scrap wood, clothespins, and other materials that are easily sourced. We will be inspired by works of many automata makers, including Robert Race, whose work is pictured here. On September 15, you you will learn the basic techniques. Between sessions you will construct a prototype and present it at the second session on September 29 at 6 pm. Our Automata Series will run from September to April 2025. It will be taught by Mirek Trejtnar, expert woodcarver, toymaker and automata builder. You will get regular consultations at this highly individualized course. You will also see the work of fellow students throughout the course. FOR WHOM IS THE WORKSHOP INTENDED? Students should be comfortable working on their own and have some experience working with wood.
