Knee - technical drawing

technical drawing
General
  • You must draw knee from en face and profile perspective.
  • Joint in the knee must be strong enough to carry the lower part of leg and feet.
  • The knee joint is the same for a puppet on string and a puppet with wire.
  • There are not many different kinds of knee joint. We are only using one.

    Knee joint
  • The process of making the knee joint is similar to the hip. There is a slit in the upper leg, and the top of the lower leg fits into this slit (and the two parts are connected by a wire).
  • The joint for knee is not visible from the front of the puppet, and the slit is only visible from the back.
  • The joint must be long enough so the puppet can kneel.
  • En face
  • Because the joint is not visible from the front, we draw lines like this: - - - -.
  • Draw the leg and find the center of the knee. The joint must be in the center of the knee. That point is the vertical center line of the entire leg.
  • The width of the joint is about 10 mm (for a puppet 50 cm high).
  • The hip joint is on the same vertical center line as the knee joint(the whole leg is on its own center line).
  • You can draw the slit based on the center line of the leg, 5 mm in both directions.
  • Once you have two vertical lines drawn for the slit, you need to determine the height of the slit. Again, you must move to your profile drawing (same process as the hip joint)
  • Profile Drawing
  • We usually cut the back part of the upper leg a bit thinner (see drawing). We leave 3-5 mm of wood in the front of the upper leg so that the joint will not be seen from the front point of view.
  • Draw a new line (with - - - - ) which is the place where the slit will start (see drawing). We will call this line the "false leg line."
  • To find the place for the hole for the wire/nail and the pivotal point of the joint, measure the distance from the bottom of the upper leg upwards (along the center line) about 15 - 25 mm. This is the place to drill the hole for the wire, and also this is the center of the pivotal point of the knee.
  • You will now make a circle at this point. To find the radius of the circle, measure the distance between the center line of the leg and the "false leg line." that you drew in step (best is R > 10 mm).
  • Draw this circle on your technical drawing.
  • Now you know how high your slit should be. You should draw the height on your profile with a horizontal line.
  • En face
  • Draw the height of the slit and center of circle wirh hole for wire/nail on your en face drawing.
