Carving

heads

Methods of carving

  • Carve only that parts which will be visible.
  • First drill all holes with table drill so they will have right angles.
  • Make sure all movable parts can move before starting to carve them.
  • Be focused on carving. Do not eat, or dring on the same place as you carve.
  • It's good to start with the hands and the head of your puppet.
  • You should work on each piece first generally and then do the details - first make sure the whole shape of the head is rounded, and only then should you start doing the eyes, nose, mouth...
  • For the global shape, you should use bigger chisels (#5, 6 - around 12 mm); for the details and deep cuts, the higher numbers (11, 12 - around 5 mm).
  • For rounding, you can use #3. Big pieces can be used in the bench, details should be done in you hands. Use sharp tools.

  • Keep your center lines (if you carve them away, you must redraw them).
  • After you use a chisel, put it away! DO NOT LET CHISELS TOUCH ONE ANOTHER and DO NOT DROP CHISELS!!!

Basic rulles for carving puppet

  • You must keep the center lines, especially en face, so that the nose and eyes are centered. If you carve the lines away, draw them again.
  • The grain: When you carve, go with the grain, not against it. When you glue pieces, it must be the same way as the grain (see above). The only exception is in the feet- there must be a dowel inside and the grain goes in different direction.
  • When you carve, you should try to make sure that the joints are moving well. Use nails to test the joints; if they are not working, you might need to carve a little more.
  • To carve details of face, etc, you should approach the detail by carving at different angles with chisels that have the profile of the shape you are trying to make. Approach the wood at two angles.
  • Depending on your design, you might want to keep the structure of the chiseling and have a rough look, or you might want to make the wood as smooth as possible. If you decide to sand your puppet, USE SANDPAPER AFTER YOU ARE COMPLETELY FINISHED WITH WOODCARVING! If you use chisels after sanding, the small pieces of sand left in the wood completely destroy the chisel.
